NIAF/Abruzzo Adopt-a-Student
On April 6, 2009 a powerful earthquake struck the city of L’Aquila in the region of Abruzzo, Italy causing more than 300 deaths and billions of dollars in property damage. Among the casualties of this disaster were the shattered hopes of 27,000 students of the University of L’Aquila, who were displaced as their university lost buildings and had to close its doors.
These students need help and the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) is dedicated to providing an answer. NIAF is building on its long tradition and strong commitment to helping young people fulfill their academic potential and pursue their dreams, by working with several universities to provide scholarships for students displaced by this terrible tragedy.
Some American universities have contacted NIAF to offer tuition scholarships for these students. This gift constitutes about two thirds of the total expense of a student’s education for one year. By contributing the cost of room and board, transportation, books and fees, you can make it possible for these students to continue their higher education while their university is rebuilt. In effect your gift will result in a 3-1 match, tripling the value of your contribution.
To accommodate 125 students from University of L’Aquila for a full academic year in the U.S., NIAF’s goal is to raise $1 million. We hope you will respond to this urgent appeal and become a donor to NIAF’s Adopt-a-Student Campaign for L’Aquila Students.
